How to Discover Your Child's Abilities

Considered ideas and theories of multiple intelligences.

Linguistic intelligence

Logical-mathematical intelligence

Observe: Take time to watch your child at play. Don't assume that your child's play is trivial or meaningless. A child will act and play in ways that may reflect differing natural, individual interests, intelligences and abilities.

Talk to your child. Ask your child about the things that seem to interest them and about apparent interests that they like more or less and why.

Test your child. Fill out an online survey.

Professional testing is available through psychological services but careful observation will usually supply you with some satisfactory implications -- but how they are expressed will often change as the child adopts another point of view or interest. Look for broader indications of interests, and differences, but not narrowed very specifically because that swings and cycles through growth phases, stages of development and age -- at home, in school and other environments and persons of interest to the child.
